Descripción de la Exposición

“Les Drapeaux” is an exhibition of eighteen flags created by 18 participating artists, invited to use this specific format. Host one week a month to wave at the top of the roof of “Maison des arts”, a contemporary art center located in a classic iconic edifice from the 19th century. After this invitation made by Pablo Cavero, then in residency at “Maison des arts”, the flags are exhibited all together at XPO gallery.This conventional presentation on the edifice, which borrows from national flags displays, gives this format its symbolism. The waving cloth is used in the fields of politics, advertisement and signage, for the visual impact it produces.Each of those answers given by the artists seize this format constraint, and highlights what defines their practices. Reflexions on image and medium, political and cultural nature of the flag or the emblem, or even the commercial image, materiality of the artwork, history quotation… as many possibles that invoke these acts of adornment. The exhibition concludes this cycle at the gallery, and presents the flags in a new context , the white cube. Artists exhibited: Aram Bartholl, Claude Closky, Constant Dullaart, Pierre Clément, Mel O'Callaghan.
