Descripción de la Exposición
Lois Lambert Gallery presents paintings by Luis Rodríguez NOA "La Isla en Movimiento "(The Island on the Move.)
In this group of paintings NOA explores the dynamics and characters of his hometown Havana, Cuba. With his own surrealistic language he captures the passion and lyricism he finds on his long walks around the city, as well as the absurdity one finds in the daily bustle of life in Cuba. According to NOA, "it's easy to become a surrealist in Cuba, all you have to do is go out into the street with paper and a pencil and copy all that you see." NOA's paintings depict those fleeting moments found in city life through a colorful expression of both comedy and tragedy.
NOA is drawn to what he calls "the true expression of the subjective." He does very little planning before he begins a painting and makes his decisions for the composition as he mixes his acrylics directly on the canvas or paper. "If I had to summarize my work I would say they are free expressions of creativity and a meeting of the intuitive and rational. They exist between the common place and the fantastical."
NOA's relationship with art began early in his life. His father is an artist and professor, and through him, Rodriguez was introduced to Cuba's artistic and intellectual circles. Luis Rodríguez NOA graduated with a degree in Sculpture and Drawing from La Escuela Nacional de Arte en La Habana (ENA). He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial (ISDI) with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Noa is a renowned graphic artist who has won awards for his work in film posters and comic strips for Cuban publications. He's exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Cuba and the Museo de las Americas in Puerto Rico.
