Descripción del Premio
In the context of the art fairs in the city of Bogota, the Fundación Sara Modiano for the Arts announced the winner of the 4th edition of the Sara Modiano Award. On this occasion, the award was given to the artist from Cartagena Dayro Carrasquilla for his proposal titled "Mandela."
A Fine and Visual Arts Master's degree candidate at the Universidad Nacional in Medellin, Carrasquilla will develop an audiovisual installation inspired on the Nelson Mandela marginal neighborhood located in his hometown. The "Mandela" exhibition will be presented in 2017, in the city of Bogota, at an exhibition space yet to be determined. For the first time since the foundation of the Sara Modiano Award, the exhibition of the winning proposal will be accompanied by a selection of earlier works by the winning artist, thus allowing for a better contextualization of his proposal.
The final selection was entrusted to a jury panel formed by José Roca, director of the curatorial team of the Sara Modiano award, Eugenio Valdés, director and curator of The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), and Cecilia Fajardo, independent curator based in Los Angeles, California (US).
According to José Roca: "The jury chose the proposal by Cartagena-based artist Dayro Carrasquilla. His work is a profound reflection on the precarious situation experienced by the inhabitants of the informal and problematic Nelson Mandela. The projects goes beyond the purely formal and feed from a participatory community process that includes previous field works with the locals. The work inscribes in the bodies of participants their demands, which are contextualized by a sound piece with audios of narratives, interviews and in-situ sounds.”
