Descripción de la Exposición

Gabriel Orozco (b. 1962, Mexico) has been an influential international figure in contemporary art since the early 1990s. Although he has enjoyed solo exhibitions at major museums throughout the world, this will be his long-awaited first solo exhibition at a museum in Japan. Orozco finds objects discarded on the street or discovers beautiful shapes in mundane contexts and, by subtly altering them, transforms them into artworks. His new readings of things-reminiscent of the Japanese garden's use of rocks and sand to evoke flowing water-offer viewers the enjoyment of pondering and deciphering his works. Orozco's universal sculptures, purified of regional or political character, and his photographs that appear like ordinary snapshots are indispensable to any discussion of '90s contemporary art. They are also artworks exerting a profound influence on young artists currently active in Japan. Orozco is opening the void and its infinite moments relevant to the Zen philosophy. His work represents a renovation of the achievements and failures of modernism and the avant-garde, and the discovery and recycling of what has been overlooked by these movements. He reveals how all things are in flux within endless cycles. From his well-known la DS-a car sliced in half and perfectly reassembled-to his newest creations, artworks of many different periods and sites will convene here, in Tokyo, and from their encounters, a new cycle will begin.
