Descripción de la Exposición

For Gallery Weekend 2016 PSM is pleased to present a new site-specific work by Eduardo Basualdo. Incisive consists of a large drawing that covers the walls of the exhibition space. The paper on which the work has been made is extremely thin, almost translucent, and on it bars reminiscent of a prison cell have been drawn—in a way creating a cage within the gallery. Using frottage to make the drawing, Basualdo put paper on top of a solid piece of metal and made an impression of its volume and shape by hand with graphite. Incisive is an installation that combines two elements that by their repetition and naturalization have become almost invisible to us: metal bars and the white cube. The first element, the bars, can be found in the urban landscape throughout the world, and are the physical expression of the absence of contract between people. We could say that for every metal gate we see there is an agreement that did not work. The second element, the white cube, is point zero of the art world. It has become the naturalized convention that art happens in those spaces; where we see white walls we see emptiness. Incisive seeks to scratch the surface of these conventions in order to put them in evidence. It is like biting a coin with our teeth in order to measure its resistance and to try to recognize whether it is real. Basualdo was born in 1977 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he continues to live and work. He studied fine arts in addition to stage design and puppeteering, which continue to influence his work. Solo shows include La Isla at the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea (2014); El Silencio de las Sirenas at the Lyon Biennale (2011); The Traveling Show, Fundación Jumex, México DF (2010); his solo exhibition at the Rochechouart Museum of Contemporary Art, France (2013); and Galeria Luisa Strina, Brazil (2013) and The End of Ending, PSM Gallery, Berlín, Germany (2012). Recent group shows include Secret Surface, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany (2016); All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennial, Venice, Italy (2015); Teoría (Goliath’s Head) at the Palais de Tokyo commissioned by SAM Art Projects (2014); La Biennale de Montevideo, Uruquay (2012); Art Parcours, Art Basel 43, Switzerland (2012). Public collections include Musée d Art Contemporain de Rochechouart, France; Tiroche de Leon Collection, Israel; Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, France; Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Canada; and Juan and Patricia Vergez, Buenos Aires.
