Impossível ['Impossible'], a solo exhibition by Sofia Borges which opens June 11th, occupies both floors of Galeria Millan with 15 new photographs, all from 2013. Just like in the exhibition Os Nomes ['The Names'], recently presented in Lisbon as one of the participating exhibits for the 2013 BES Photo Award (which can be seen at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake from June on), Impossível features photos of snippets of explanatory panels at the Museum of Comparative Anatomy and Paleontology of Paris.
Though both exhibitions make use of similar strategies, the artist believes that, in the new exhibition, presented at Millan, 'the works are deepened, or they're shipwrecked rather, in an attempt to establish a place between rendering and abstraction, between painting and photography, between the image and its surface.'

The fruit of a continuous questioning regarding the nature of the photographic image, a research which Sofia has been developing since the beginning of her artistic career, this exhibition is divided into two groups with quite distinct looks and rhythms, each one placed in one floor in the gallery. 'It's a strange, radical exhibition, with no axis. These are photos that try to dissolve, or invert, or erase the idea of referent, of window. The images attempt to speak about the bankruptcy of language, but they are mute.'
