In english The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros offers a grant for a Venezuelan artist to attend the summer program SOMA Summer in Mexico City, from July 6 to August 28, 2015. SOMA Summer is a unique eight-week program for visual artists, art historians, and curators conducted in English in Mexico City. SOMA Summer introduces participants to the dynamic art scene of Mexico City through visits to museums, openings and artists’ studios. The program consists on a series of short seminars and workshops led by a selection of renowned Mexican and international artists. Participants meet weekly for individual critiques with a variety of artists and curators. Activities are designed to promote intense creative work and artistic dialogue. SOMA is a space for reconsideration and reflection, where participants have the opportunity to critically analyze their work and to revisit their creative processes. SOMA facilities consist of shared working studios. Labs and workshop space are not available. Nevertheless, we provide logistical support for producing work within Mexico City. Applicants must demonstrate significant experience in their field. Accepted SOMA applicants are expected to participate in all of the program activities. All program activities are in English. SOMA Summer 2015 will focus on the idea of excess departing from the theory developed by Georges Bataille. The excessive elasticity of the international monetary and financial system (and its role in the recent financial crisis), coupled with the excessive emission of carbon dioxide (leading, inevitably, to global warming) might provoke an urge to slow down, to contain. Excess seems to be the malaise of our time. During SOMA Summer 2015, we will focus on the idea of excess and its relationship with contemporary art. We will depart from the proposal of the French writer Georges Bataille, who considers excess in the form of waste or “expenditure” not as a malaise, but as an outlet of energy that needs to be spent. It is here that he locates art. Along these lines, we will analyze the libidinal forces that connect the economic and aesthetic spheres. We will also revise the overwhelming Baroque style (specifically the Mexican Baroque), which developed in XVII century as a manifestation of the power of the Church and the State, as well as its influence in today’s art production and consumption. Our notion of excess will, itself, expand as we explore the concept during seminars, lectures, and workshops with participating artists, curators, and academics in the field. Invited collaborators for 2015: Seminars, workshops and lectures: Eduardo Abaroa (artist MX), Mariana Botey (artist/writer MX), Juli Carson (curator/writer USA), Jorge Luis Marzo (curator Spain), José Luis Sánchez Rull (artist MX), Javier Toscano (artist/ writer MX) Special sessions/lectures: Mariana Botey (artist MX), Diedrich Diedrichsen (DE), Camel Collective (artist collective: Anthony Graves and Carla Herrera-Prats USA,MX), Fernando Mesta (curator MX), Juliane Rebentisch (DE) Studio visits: Rocío Boliver (La congelada de uva) (artist MX), Jota Izquierdo (artist Spain), Vicente Razo (artist MX), Miguel Ventura (artist MX, USA) Individual critiques: Magali Arriola (curator MX), Irving Dominguez (critic MX), Amy Sara Carroll (art historian USA), Helena Chávez (curator/writer MX), Tatiana Cuevas (curator MX), Mariana David (curator MX), Ricardo Dominguez (artist USA), Magnolia de la Garza (curator MX), Anthony Graves (artist USA), Nate Harrison (artist/ writer USA), Carla Herrera-Prats (artist MX), Enrique Jezik (artist AR), Graciela Kasep (curator MX), Willy Kautz (curator MX), Catalina Lozano (curator CO), Alejandra Labastida (curator MX), Yoshua Okón, Luis Felipe Ortega (artist MX), Raúl Ortega Ayala (artist MX), Pedro Ortiz-Antorzanz (curator ES), Bárbara Perea (curator MX), Paola Santoscoy (curator US)
