Descripción de la Exposición
Gallery Christoffer Egelund proudly present our first solo exhibition with the Copenhagen-based Chilean artist Javier Tapia: High Density: Fragments, stories & traditions.
Javier Tapia invades the gallery space with enormous collages in which history of culture is unfolded from a personal point of view. The collages are the culmination of the artist's diligent compiliation of visual material throughout the last three years.
An anti-hierarchical network of ideas and narratives takes form before the eyes of the spectator. This is the right place to be curious and to navigate through distant times and places. Cuttings from art magazines and animal encyclopedias sit side by side with pins, fragments of ropes and other objets trouvés. Together, they form a playful, yet ambitious, research of the history and development of representation.
The exhibition takes form of a total installation wherein we are allowed access to the personal universe of the artist through which we can discover our common world. In the accumulation of material, the artistic process is laid bare as dissected collective memory. Tapia's artworks can be investigated as a visual language helpful in the subjetive (re)writing of the history of culture and nature on this planet of ours.
The collages seem systematical and messy at the same time, an effect achieved by allowing white spaces between the different elements of the collages. Some of the collage elements are chosen to lead their own independent lives in gray-scale photographic prints hung outside the collage entities. They function as clues or rallying points for the diversity of themes found in the collages.
In the aesthetic archive of Javier Tapia new democratic relations are formed when representations of highly regarded art objects are placed next to orange plastic spoons.
