Descripción de la Exposición

“Hairitage" is an exhibition that explores the multifaceted significance of hair in contemporary society. This exhibition promises to blend research with art, offering a provocative experience for attendees. At the heart of "Hairitage" is recognising that hair is not merely a physical feature, but a powerful symbol of identity and expression. Through engaging artworks and real-life narratives, we will explore the several ways in which individuals perceive and interact with their hair, as well as how it shapes perceptions from others. The exhibition comprises three main components. Firstly, the Artistic section showcases a diverse range of artworks from different mediums centred around hair. These pieces serve as more than mere visual stimuli; they prompt reflection on the connections between hair and personal identity, inviting viewers to explore the depths of self-expression. Secondly, the Experiential segment displays audiovisual interviews and profiles featuring individuals from various backgrounds, beliefs, genders, and sexualities. Here, visitors will watch recordings of individuals sharing personal stories or cultural perspectives on hair, further enriching their understanding and appreciation of its significance and gaining insight into the deeply personal and culturally significant roles that hair plays in their lives. Thirdly, we have the Participatory component which aims to put the visitor as an active participant in the exhibition. We would like to set up 01 tactile, interactive, installation where visitors can touch and feel different types of hair textures, from straight to curly, coarse to fine. Providing descriptive labels explaining the cultural and genetic significance of various hair textures, we will encourage attendees to reflect on their own hair texture and how it influences their sense of identity and belonging. In addition to the tactile experience and informational components, each hair texture panel will include a designated container labelled with the corresponding hair type where visitors can participate in an “exhibition demographic data analysis”. Visitors who wish to contribute can choose to participate by cutting a small piece of their own hair and adding it to the container that matches their hair type. This voluntary contribution allows attendees to actively engage with the exhibition's themes while also providing valuable insights into the demographics and representation of hair textures present among our visitors. By the end of the exhibition, we will collect and analyze the hair samples from each container. This data will enable us to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity and representation of hair textures within our audience, as well as insights into the cultural and genetic factors influencing hair texture across different demographic groups. Through this interactive installation, "Hairitage" aims to foster meaningful engagement with the exhibition and contribute to a broader conversation about diversity, identity, and representation within contemporary society. "Hairitage" promises to challenge preconceived notions and spark conversations about the profound significance of something as seemingly simple as hair. We aim to invite the audience, the artists and our collaborators to start a deeper relationship with their hair beyond the aesthetics of it, beyond the "my hair looks good/bad today." Through our work, we seek to foster a greater understanding of the cultural, personal, and societal implications intertwined with hair, encouraging reflection and dialogue that transcends surface-level perceptions.
