Descripción de la Exposición
The controlled space-time of the modern times brought about unbalanced preponderance of information. What allowed concealing from control were freedom of citizens, democratic ideology and the waves of social reform. However, since the method tended to be extremely direct and violent, it soon had to face with criticism and the system was forced to be dissolved. This context is also perceived in "Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison" of Michel Foucault, published in 1975. The bleak outlook on "disciplinary society" where people surveil and control one another shows a monster-like social structure created by the modern times valuing rationality as the optimum virtue of the society. Today, information transformed into the post-subject, post-space and deterritorialized dimension. Information can be produced by any one, therefore, it is given flexible characteristics. Moreover, bilateral surveillance of information was allowed as well. Nonetheless, we cannot deny that this autonomous information is being reterritorialized by capitalism. For this reason, though the form is completely different from the previous ones, control seems to repeat. However, its aspect and modality differ. The coercive watchtower of the center has been demolished, and its algorithm operates in a more efficient network system of bilateral surveillance. It works as a panopticon of the new era which strongly regulates and controls the society not through the aspects of agents of power or capital but through the aspects of citizens. When doubting of the quality of information, it will respond as quantitative predominance which does not even allow the precise detection of it, and what matters only will be the plausible truth rather than the truth itself. There is no need to doubt about the efficiency of system and its absoluteness. It is because it is about intelligent approaches from "Machine-God" transcending humans. Like this, Machine-God plays a role as a mediator of the society and this is the algorithmic society. In other words, it refers to a digital-based social structure analyzing and solving a variety of social problems through algorithm based on artificial intelligence and Big data. The recent issues of the Fourth Industrial Revolution consist of powerful elements of the algorithmic society. As Pedro Domingos predicted in his book "The Master Algorithm," we are living in a society in which not only computer learns by itself but also it creates the optimal algorithm with respect to all kinds of data. The problem occurs at this very point. Even though the subject of mediation and control is directly delivered to the public, the subject of algorithm of its operation is not different from the previous ones. The experience of frustration and disconnection of social reform from the controlled information is considered our clear memory penetrating the modern times, which cannot be only buried as mere regional characteristics (Gwangju).
