Descripción de la Exposición
Kyoto Art Center “Artist -in-Residence Program” aims to support emerging artists / researchers who engage creative activities through the different culture. We start new partnership program with “Videobrasil” which is institute of art festival in Sao Paulo; Brasil. In this year we invited Maya Watanabe, an cutting-edge Peruvian Filmmaker, in order to do her research and production during two months. This exhibition is presented her current project in Kyoto “EARTHQUAKES”.
Videobrasil is a biennial art festival focused on film in Sao Paulo; Brazil. The festival has several features to support young artists. Innovative pieces and artists based on “global south countries” are selected by committee. They award residency prizes to artists at institutions around the world that are partners of Videobrasil Residency Program. Watanabe was awarded the Res Artis / Kyoto Art Center Prize to participate in this residency program in the 19th Videobrasil 2015. It is first time for her to come to Asian country, even though her grandfather is Japanese. Also she hardly experienced working in other language than Spanish as her mother tongue, so we could imagine how tough this great challenge is.
Watanabe’s artistic practice describes accurate flame work and high abstract scenario that it doesn’t rely on a specific location and time axis. Lately in her work she is expanding to set virtual world on the miniature scale model as film stage, it looks like Sci-Fi but also has practical detail obviously. She says the title “EARTHQUAKES” doesn’t mean the natural phenomenon itself but the collapse of narrative. You will realize the reality of images again when the earthquake occurring on the timeline suddenly connects with your consciousness. We look forward to introducing to you her philosophy with keen sense of perspective while treating Japanese essence as her own roots carefully.
