Descripción de la Exposición
Helga de Alvear Gallery is pleased to present a selection of José Pedro Croft’s most recent artistic production. Under the title Duplo/Dobles, this exhibition features a selection of sculptures, drawings, and prints conceived to pose a reflection on the identity of the work of art. Time and space shall be introduced as essential principles in defining the creative process.
Croft invites the viewer to experience what he describes as a "the production of memories of time." Being an expert in making multiple media coexist, he skillfully factors the temporal habitat in which each of them manifests. This results in a confluence of layers of time. For instance, the immediacy of varnish coexists with the deliberate slowness of Indian ink.
The juxtaposition and superimposition of these layers emerge as a singular gesture, engaging with the identity of the artwork and its projection. Along the lines of Lacanian thought—where the double functions as a mirrored image that contributes to the construction of identity—Croft employs subtle variations in color and specific details to cause the viewer to oscillate between similarity and difference.
In the first room, visitors encounter a painted iron sculpture. Two open circular structures, each four meters in diameter, are placed in direct relation to one another. They interact within the conceptual framework of the double, where they are an extension of each other but may also be read as standing in confrontation.
The remaining galleries showcase several series of drawings. One features a circular structure that unfolds in different variations and evokes a sense of an open-end body of work. This sequence suggests parallels with musical composition, where a central structure serves to develop the whole piece. Also, worth mentioning is a series of three drawings made on a print. In these works, the impossibility of seeing artwork that lays underneath, that is, its double, causes a disturbance in the viewer’s perception. "We see only the surface, but within it, another part of existence remains," Croft asserts.
