Es la segunda exposición de Gonçalo Sena en Baginski.

Gonçalo Sena's second exhibition at Baginski, Galeria/ Projectos, Distant Smoke, is composed by a series of new sculptural and drawing work, focused on the triad object-action-landscape. In the logical continuity of previous work by the artist, one finds a confined material lexicon, in the search for equilibrium, scale, endurance and length, within a working process of constant transition between the drawing practice and the pieces' construction.

 

For this exhibition, Gonçalo Sena explores the notions of repetition and accumulation, by means of an ensemble of pieces that establish cement as their common denominator. To its opaque and porous qualities one finds opposing materials from different natures - translucent and reflectors, industrial and organic - as volatile elements of fewer resistance and inertia, transforming each piece in an autonomous universe of cadence and wait.

 

A series of triangular-cut cement rods interline one of the gallery's walls, in a visual grid that accentuates distances and relations between objects and viewer, also connecting the floor's horizontal level with the wall's vertical plane. The visual juxtaposition between the rods and these very same surfaces, where other sculptures and drawings are placed, expands the set's presence in space as sculptural made drawing that demands from the viewer constant readjustment between foreground and depth of field. The human scale and density of these works contrasts, in turn, with small scale ethereal drawings, accumulating in their strata line-scraped layers of opacity and translucency.

 

In these distance-to-proximity motions, so much physical as visual, the viewer becomes an integrant part of an unstable composition, engaging with the sculptural and drawing set an errant and nomadic choreography, characterized by advance, interruption and recede, in successive exchange between foreground and background, thus emulating Gonçalo Sena's work process.

 

Distant Smoke is Gonçalo Sena's second solo exhibition at Baginski, Galeria/ Projectos, after Naquilo que se ergue, advém a terra como o que dá guarida, in 2010.
