Descripción de la Exposición
Design Miami/ Basel returns June 12–17, 2018, for its thirteenth edition, featuring forty-seven gallery presentations and ten Curio installations as well as Satellites, Collaborations, Talks, and exclusive events. Design Miami/ Basel 2018 also incorporates a number of exciting programs.
“At a time when the pace of our lives seems to be ever increasing, from the news cycle to social media updates, it feels like an opportune moment to take a step back, to appreciate the qualities inherent in good design––to notice how function, beauty, and materiality affect the ways in which we engage with each other and with the world at large,” says Rodman Primack, Chief Creative Officer, Design Miami/.
“As knowledge about and interest in collectible design continues to grow, we’re looking forward to welcoming a wider range of international buyers and attendees to our Basel edition this summer,” says Jen Roberts, Chief Executive Officer, Design Miami/.
Gallery Debuts, Founding Galleries, and Standout Solo Shows/
This year Design Miami/ Basel welcomes forty-seven of the most distinguished design galleries from thirteen countries to present exhibitions of collectible design available for acquisition, including rare and unique furniture, lighting, and objets d’art. Five galleries will be making their Design Miami/ Basel debut this year: Caterina Tognon (Venice), which represents international contemporary artists and designers working primarily with glass; Galerie Mitterrand (Paris), which for twenty-five years has shown significant sculpture works and produced public exhibitions of monumental sculpture; Galerie Regis Mathieu (Paris), which will show historic chandeliers from 1890 to 1930; The Future Perfect (Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco), known for its roster of distinguished and emerging contemporary designers; and Side Gallery (Barcelona), which focuses on Latin American historical design, Spanish design of the past century, and rare design works by architects.
Twelve galleries that have exhibited at Design Miami/ Basel since its first edition will again present outstanding displays of historic and contemporary design: ammann//gallery (Cologne), Cristina Grajales Gallery (New York), Dansk Møbelkunst Gallery (Copenhagen & Paris), Demisch Danant (New York), Galerie kreo (London and Paris), Galerie Patrick Seguin (Paris), Hostler Burrows (New York), Jousse Entreprise (Paris), LAFFANOUR - Galerie Downtown (Paris), Magen H Gallery (New York), Nilufar Gallery (Milan), and R & Company (New York).
Several designers will be featured with solo presentations. Galerie Mitterrand will present work from a dynamic design duo whose surreal sculptures and objets d’art are coveted by collectors: husband and wife François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne, or Les Lalanne as they are known collectively. At Friedman Benda (New York), Tokyo-based designer nendo (Oki Sato) will show examples of his striking furniture design, which has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among many others. Salon 94 Design (New York) will showcase the works of Korea n designer Kwangho Lee. Side Gallery (Barcelona) presents a selection of their rich collection of modernist furniture by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Design at Large, Curated by François Halard/
Design at Large presents large-scale historical and contemporary design curated each year by a different global tastemaker. This edition’s ambitious installation is envisioned by photographer François Halard, known for his distinctive images of interior spaces and architecture. Halard has portrayed the houses, gardens, and ateliers of singular personalities around the world, including Louise Bourgeois, Luigi Ghirri, Saul Leiter, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly, as well as such architectural masterpieces as Casa Malaparte, Capri; Villa Noailles, Hyères, France; and La Maison de Verre, Paris. Time is Halard’s most frequent collaborator––his patience is one of the key elements of his visionary work.
Design at Large is intended to be a site of discovery for visitors, presenting a selection of works that explore a particular theme inspired by current topics in design.
“I am thrilled to have been invited to curate the Design at Large exhibition at Design Miami/Basel this June. Design in all its forms has been part of my life since childhood, integrating and affecting all aspects of my practice,” says Halard. “With the exhibition, I am particularly interested in exploring notions of time and how time impacts design, the creative process and our lives.”
Satellites, Featuring Stuart Parr’s Vintage Motorcycles/
Satellites, inventive exhibitions presented by museums, bookstores, brands, and private collectors, are organized around a single curatorial theme or educational perspective.
Following the success of Kenny Schachter’s curated car show satellite #MANUAL at Design Miami/ Basel 2017, Stuart Parr will present selections from his collection of classic 1970s Italian motorcycles. The satellite presentation is a variation of his popular exhibition Art of the Italian Two Wheel, which was presented in Miami’s Design District in winter 2018.
Talks/
The Talks program features dynamic discussions that offer informed perspectives on producing, exhibiting, and collecting design today. Talks are held June 12–13, 3 and 5pm, and take place in the MCH Lounge, which is accessible to the public and located next to the Satellite do you read me?! The bookstore returns to the fair to present a curated selection of architecture and design books alongside rare editions.
Design Miami/ Basel Gains a Second Entrance/
Unlimited, Art Basel's sector for artworks that transcend the traditional art fair booth, is being relocated to Hall 1.1 this year, resulting in a secondary entrance into Design Miami/ Basel. Located on the same level as Unlimited, there will be a café accessible to ticketholders of either fair and the opportunity to purchase tickets.
