Almost five years after his first solo show at Proyecto Paralelo –in fact the gallery opener- Ignasi Aballí presents his most recent work produced after a period of large scale institutional shows that have wrought a comprehensive revision of his career so far.
For his second engagement at Proyecto Paralelo he presents us with a body of work that is almost invisible –both literally and metaphorically. The show revolves around a set of works in which glass is presented in various ways: objects, photographs or direct interventions. The preference for this translucent material is linked to Aballi’s ongoing interest for the limits between the visible and the invisible, for that area of uncertainty that opens up in between what we see, what we perceive and what we know.
Aballi’s focus on minimal gestures, on what Duchamp called the infra-mince, is braced by a number of works that carry on his production using...texts –lists, archives, classifications- and that function as catalysts of meaning within the whole show.
In CUALQUIER TITULO (ANY TITLE), Aballi references both the specific architecture of the gallery by introducing an alien and almost invisible structure, as well as Art History in the reconstruction of a painting by Paul Klee through language. The broken glass objects that have been painstakingly rebuilt point to the fragility of art as a practice, as a system of interpretation and also as a method of representation. Aballi sets forward a series of fragments that we can sense belong to a whole that nevertheless remains incomplete, open, that could in the end be anything.
Ignasi Aballí (1958, Barcelona) has recently presented a comprehensive exhibition of his oeuvre titled without beginning/without end at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid in 2015- 16. In 2015 he was awarded the prestigious Joan Miró Prize and in connection to it he presented the exhibition Infinite Sequence at Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. Aballí has had recently solo exhibitions at Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo (2010), Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (2008), Museu Serralves in Porto, Ikon Gallery in Birmingham and ZKM in Karlsruhe (all 2006), Museum of Contemporary Art de Barcelona MACBA (2005), and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia MNCARS, Madrid (2002). He participated in the 4th Guangzhou Triennial (2012), the 52nd Venice Biennale, the 8th Sharjah Biennial, UAE (both 2007), and the 11th Biennial of Sydney (1998) and the XIII Bienal of Cuenca, Ecuador (2016-17).
