Descripción de la Exposición

Denver, Colo. – The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver) today announced its summer exhibition Critical Landscapes: Selected Works from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection on view from June 7 to Sept. 1, 2024. “MCA Denver is excited to feature an incredible group of artists, who are among the most insightful and important voices emerging from Latin America today,” said Nora Burnett Abrams, MCA Denver Mark G. Falcone Director. “With a number of works engaging with the intricate ideas and landscapes of Ecuador, Cuba and Brazil, these artists' works are deeply embedded in the specificities of their environment. In many instances, they are probing the ways in which natural resources are both celebrated and extracted, revered and commercialized in their specific contexts.” The selection of works also intends to engage with MCA’s concurrent exhibition, Gala Porras-Kim: A Hand in Nature, both directly and indirectly, offering additional and wide-ranging examples of how artists are working with the natural world, using it as material, inspiration and subject matter. Since its founding, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) has been instrumental in collecting, exhibiting, commissioning, and championing art from across Latin America. MCA Denver’s presentation Critical Landscapes: Selected Works from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection will feature a range of artists, including more established (Ana Mendieta) to more emerging voices (Oscar Abraham Pabón), and, across two floors, will highlight the many ways in which artists from this region are engaging with the particular histories, materials, and events directly and indirectly inspired by their environment. “It is an honor to collaborate with CIFO and present some of the most riveting and signal works from their collection,” Abrams noted. “From a probing series of photographs by Ana Mendieta that explore the body’s relationship to the land, to Jac Leirner’s masterful manipulations of everyday materials like sudoku puzzles or rolling papers into revelatory installations, the CIFO collection offers extraordinary access to these, and many other, artists from the region, and beyond,” said Abrams. Artists in the exhibition: Adrián Balseca (b. 1989, Quito; lives and works in Buenos Aires) Johanna Calle (b. 1965, Bogotá; lives and works in Bogotá) Dario Escobar (b. 1971, Guatemala City, Guatemala; lives and works between Guatemala City and Mexico City) Jac Leirner (b. 1961, São Paulo; lives and works in São Paulo) Anna Maria Maiolino (b. 1942, Scalea, Italy; lives and works in São Paulo) Ana Mendieta (1948, Havana – 1985, Greenwich Village, NY) Oscar Abraham Pabón (b. 1984, San Juan de Colón, Estado Táchira, Venezuela; lives and Works in Barcelona) Adán Vallecillo (b. 1977, Danlí, Honduras; lives and works in Tegucigalpa, Honduras) This exhibition is organized by Nora Burnett Abrams, Mark G. Falcone Director at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, in collaboration with Sergio Fontanella, Director of Operations & Collections at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation.
