Descripción de la Exposición
Lois Lambert Gallery presents Alan Manuel Gonzalez's, "Contained Metaphors." Gonzalez's hyper-realistic and symbolic paintings reflect modern day Cuba. He explores the hardships of life in Cuba by painting landscapes, landmarks and various situations trapped in transparent vessels.
Just as Paleolithic man expressed the conditions of life in the caves of Lascaux, Gonzalez's paintings are chronicles of his life in Cuba. "I paint where I live, I paint what surrounds me, I paint what I yearn for, I paint for the common man, not in the stone walls with charcoal and blood, but on canvas with paint, acrylic and mixed media." Gonzalez's process is thoughtful, reflective and laborious; he spends hours and often days drawing sketches, taking photos, and consulting with his peers before he puts paint on canvas. The many layers of his paintings are evidence of painstaking work; a creative process he describes as a brief agony. The final product is cathartic for him and expresses Gonzalez's discontent with the isolation of Cuba.
In 1998, Gonzalez immigrated to the United States where he worked for four years as a cake decorator, creating three=dimensional sculptures and high reliefs, airbrushed with edible colors. This experience helped Alan develop the skillful use of airbrushing techniques that he now uses in his paintings. Since his return to Cuba, he has been dedicated exclusively to painting.
Gonzalez studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes and the Instituto Superior de Arte and Escuela Vocacional de Artes in Cuba. Gonzalez's work is exhibited at the Museo de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he has also shown his work in both solo and group shows throughout Cuba and Europe. In the United States Gonzalez has shown in both Colorado and Florida.
