Descripción de la Exposición
In the middle of the 20th century, Brazil underwent profound economic and social changes that resulted in the growth and verticalisation of its urban centers. Contingents of immigrants, many of whom came to the country after World War II to start a new life, headed for these cities. In architecture and design, the development of a modern language and industry capable of producing new materials provided tools to respond to the challenges of furnishing a new type of housing and meeting a cosmopolitan lifestyle.
It was in this scenario that Carlo Hauner (1927-96), an Italian who came to São Paulo in 1948 and in 1950 founded the company Artesanal Furniture to produce modern furniture. Hauner was the main designer at the company until the arrival of fellow immigrant Martin Eisler (1913-77), an Austrian architect who came to Brazil from Argentina in 1953. Both were responsible for designing pieces that became classics of modern Brazilian design and for running a store that established itself as a reference for sophistication at the time. Artesanal was also an incubator of many leading designers in Brazil, such as Ernesto and Georgia Hauner or Sergio Rodrigues. Despite of its successful, the company had a short life: in 1955 it was restructured as Forma and Carlo Hauner left the company.
This is the largest exhibition ever made in Brazil about the work of these two illustrious designers during the time they were in charge of Móveis Artesanal e Forma.
