Descripción de la Exposición
James Cohan is pleased to present Borders, an exhibition that will span our Chelsea and Lower East Side spaces. In our polarized world, lives are increasingly limited by the physical and ideological manifestations of borders. This exhibition aims to examine our new reality and to highlight artists whose work explores formally and politically how borders can be a fixed means to delineate space while also being mutable and porous. The works brought together represent a range of media.
Borders are synonymous with state power, sovereignty and national identity; they can be simultaneously exclusionary and inclusionary. As a reaction to the growing global refugee crisis and heightened nationalism, borders across the world are tightening and also unraveling. This exhibition seeks to create a framework and a dialogue about borders as both places of productive exchange and barriers of exclusion.
