Art Busan, the biggest home-grown art fair in the first half year, is to be held at BEXCO Exhibition Center from May 9-12, starting with a VIP preview on May 9. The 13th edition of the fair strengthened its gallery sections such as MAIN and FUTURE. The fair will be joined by about 130 galleries representing 20 countries to showcase a colorful line-up. This year especially offers an opportunity to explore the latest trends in the Asian art market. The main programs include the special exhibition CONNECT where the diversity of the show branches out beyond the existing fair and CONVERSATIONS which invites prominent members from the art scene to share their insights. This year, Art Busan appointed an outside director to select a theme embracing the whole program to enhance its presence in a global setting. Henna Joo, associate professor at Hongik University and the former global director of Arario Gallery, takes the helm as the first director of CONNECT. She is set to direct 8 exhibitions including ‘The Solidarity of Asian Art Scene’ and ‘Female Contemporary Artists’. Interesting programs across Busan are arranged for various visitors from VIP collectors to families. ‘Busan Art Week’ also returns with events introducing local cultural arts programs along with local F&Bs to turn the city into a festival. Also, the organizer gears up diverse experiences from an exclusive program for VIPs to Kids education program for increasing young collectors in their 30s and 40s, and families. Exhibition spaces and digital services will make visits and transactions much easier this year. The Collectors lounge boasts its spacious 826㎡ space to prioritize luxurious leisure to offer a special VIP experience. The visitors will also get an opportunity to use the newly introduced digital service Art Round to get information about the artworks and make inquiries, which helps the communications between participating galleries and potential buyers and further expands the art fair experience. Amid the high interest towards the art scene, the 13th edition of Art Busan will cement its position as a leading global art fair as it draws high levels of expectations from art enthusiasts. Art Busan, which has been bridging the local market with the global one and connecting galleries and the world with Asian collectors, is to welcome participating galleries from various countries and regions to this year’s fair. As the global art market continues to be on an upward trend, 26 galleries from home and abroad newly joined the fair looking to expand their client base. Twenty-one domestic galleries achieving rapid growth, including SUHIN GALLERY, GalleryMEME, THEO, and GALLERY IN are newcomers to the fair. From overseas, Lechbinska Gallery (Zurich, Dubai), WE COLLECT (Madrid), biscuit gallery (Tokyo, Karuizawa), Art Tribeca (New York), and MYTH Gallery (St. Petersburg) will participate in Art Busan 2024. Art Busan was established in 2012 to develop cultural infrastructure in the Busan-Gyeongnam area. It has grown based on the art scene of the port city and locality. To stand with its reputation, many local-based galleries participate in the fair to boost the local art scene. Twenty-eight local galleries including Johyun Gallery, GALLERY SHILLA, OKNP, and LEEAHN GALLERY will join Art Busan 2024, comprising nearly 21% of the total number of exhibitors. CONNECT: Special Exhibition The Art fair will feature its special program CONNECT which conveys the diversity of the exhibition beyond the fair. The section includes a more dynamic and diverse range of contemporary artworks from large-scale sculpture to interactive art, performance, site-specific installation, and media art. The exhibition will help participating galleries and artists reach viewers in various forms beyond the booth. Galleries from MAIN section can apply for the CONNECT exhibition and selected galleries will be offered free space. Beginning this year, an outside director will be appointed to strengthen expertise and improve the fairness of the program. Henna Joo, an associate professor at Hongik University, has been named as the first director. Under the theme of ‘The Solidarity of Asia Art Scene’ and ‘Female Contemporary Artists’, 3 categories – Artists, Regions, and Galleries, and 8 sectors are organized to deliver Art Busan’s vision to connect every interested party and art lover without any international boundaries. ‘Herstory’ highlights the first generation of female artists representing Asian contemporary arts. The special exhibition will present a curated selection of artists in Asia and beyond, including Kusama Yayoi, Jung Kang-ja, Xiao Lu, and Cindy Sherman. ‘FOCUS ASIA: CHINA’ takes the solidarity of Asia as its motif and further highlights the trend in the Asia art scene. The exhibition will feature the works of important artists: Zhu Jinshi, Yan Lei, Ma Shuqing, Tan Ping, and others. ‘ART ACCENT’, Art Busan’s support program for rising artists, celebrates its 12th anniversary. This year’s topic is ‘Phenomenology’, and the program will invite 2 local artists and 3 artists from the Royal College of Art (RCA) to collaborate to spotlight the local and young artist scene. The show will shed light on the grammar of ultra-contemporary artists who try to break away from embodied knowledge learned from social media and mass media in a society, where digital civilization-derived dichotomous perspective dominates. Participating galleries - Johyun Gallery, N GALLERY, LEE & BAE, GALLERY SERENE SPACE, and others will present a special exhibition with 1 additional artist. Johyun Gallery will showcase the works of Kang Kang Hoon, while N GALLERY will spotlight Jean Boghossian’s works. Artist Myunggyun You’s installations will be presented by LEE & BAE and Eunju Jeong’s drawings are to be presented by GALLERY SERENE SPACE.
