Descripción de la Exposición
After a successful debut, with recognition expressed by the market, the several exhibitors, and an audience estimated at more than 10,500 people, the ArPa art fair has its second edition in 2023, from May 31st to June 4th, with the participation of more galleries, a renowned curatorial team, and a reinforcement of its mission to propose a deep and close experience with the general public and art collectors. The fair takes place at Pavilhão Pacaembu, a space located in the Complexo Pacaembu, with entrance through Charles Miller Plaza.
ArPa is an initiative of Allegra Pacaembu - the concessionaire that took over the management of Pacaembu in 2020, directed by Camilla Barella, cultural manager and founder of VIVA Projects and collaborator of Frieze since 2017. In this edition, the realization of ArPa will be simultaneous with MADE - Mercado, Arte, Design; a design fair that reaches its eleventh edition. The partnership is an initiative of design curator Waldick Jatobá.
ArPa is also directed by Cristina Candeloro and receives around 50 exhibitors that market their works in the 4 thousand m² space. The infrastructure, organization and sales carried out during the fair in 2022 made ArPa, in its first edition, earn a good reputation among members of the Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art (ABACT), according to a survey conducted in partnership with the Association of Art Galleries (AGAB) in September 2022.
In this second edition, Camilla points out the intimate and welcoming character successfully proposed in the last edition. "We create an atmosphere that allows the audience to have more time to talk to the exhibitors and also to visually elaborate the fair's content. Pointed out as a positive characteristic of ArPa, we propose to the galleries owners to think of their exhibition stands as special projects, often with their own curatorships", Camilla says.
Among the special project highlights already announced, is the Gustavo Rebello Arte Gallery with a stand featuring the artist Ivan Serpa, who in 2023 will be celebrated for his 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of his death; the Mendes Wood DM Gallery proposes a dialogue between the works of Swedish artist Runo Lagomarsino and the artist Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, from the state of Espírito Santo; an the Argentinian Isla Flotante Gallery, in its second participation, presents the artist Valentin Demarco. ArPa will also have a 50% increase of international galleries in the Main Section, with representatives from Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay, reinforcing the exchange with the Latin American art scene.
Just like in its first edition, ArPa will have exhibition stands for young galleries and also for consolidated spaces in the art circuit, gathering exhibitors from the primary and secondary market. ArPa and MADE have as sponsors: Beck's, Mitsubishi and MOS. Official hotel: Tivoli Mofarrej.
Curatorship and sections
Arpa organized a curatorship team with a long experience in the arts field, privileging different approaches and decentralized perspectives, reinforcing then the plural character of the fair. This year, the curators are Carla Zaccagnini, an Argentinian who is currently based in São Paulo and Malmö (Sweden), curator from the 34th Bienal de São Paulo; Diego Matos, researcher, teacher and curator graduated in Architecture, ex chief-curator in the Brazilian Sculpture and Ecology Museum (MuBE); and the Mexican José Esparza Chong Cuy, curator, writer and architect who works as an Executive and Curator Director in Storefront for Art and Architecture, in New York.
Like last year, each curator will be responsible for a section. The division was thought to facilitate the audience's enjoyment and to allow the creation of more details within the context of each segment. The Main Section is curated by the fair itself, while the UNI Section is curated by José Esparza Chong Cuy, the Satélite Section is curated by Diego Matos, and the Sala MOS is curated by Carla Zaccagnini. José, the only curator who is not debuting this year at ArPa, was responsible for curating the Satélite Section in 2022.
See below descriptions of participating sections and galleries. We expect more galleries to be confirmed in the next few weeks.
Main Section
Brazilian galleries with diverse profiles and from different regions of Brazil will participate in this sector. Each exhibitor will feature two or three artists, with exhibition stands ranging from 30 to 50 m², in order to prioritize the contemplative experience of art and create a more intimate atmosphere with the collectors.
Confirmed Galleries are: Almeida & Dale Galeria de Arte, Andrea Rehder Arte Contemporânea, casa triângulo, Casanova Arte, Cassia Bomeny Galeria, Galeria Cavalo, Galleria Continua, Dan Galeria, Galeria Estação, Fólio, Gomide & Co, Gustavo Rebello Arte, Galeria Inox, Isla Flotante, Galeria Karla Osorio, Kubik Gallery, Galeria Leme, Lima Galeria, Luciana Brito Galeria, Galeria Lume, Galeria MaPa, Galeria Marília Razuk, Mendes Wood DM, Galeria Mercedes Viegas, Millan, Mitre Galeria, Galeria Murilo Castro, OÁ Galeria, OMA Galeria, Piero Atchugarry Gallery, Pinakotheke Cultural, Quadra, Galeria Raquel Arnaud, Ricardo Von Brusky, Rodrigo Ratton Galeria, Simões de Assis, Galeria Ybakatu, Zipper Galeria.x
UNI Section
For this section, the curator José Esparza Chong Cuy selected galleries and denominated them Mensagens (Messages), which brings to ArPa projects from an artist represented by them in a solo exhibition. About his curatorial conception, José says: "Repeated traces and marks become spirals, curved lines and shapes that create unexpected shapes pointing to an organic future. Mensagens brings together a group of artists whose practices grow from inside out as signs of life and the time ahead."
The galleries/artists confirmed for this sector are: Campeche (Jou Morales), Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel (Cristiano Lenhardt), Galatea (Beatrice Arraes), Galeria Sendros (Andrés Piña), GDA (Maíra Dietrich), HOA (Marian Rocha), Marli Matsumoto Arte Contemporânea (Juan Casemiro), Sé (Michel Zózimo).
José, who lives in New York City, is a curator, writer, architect and works as an Executive and Curator Director in Storefront for Art and Architecture, in New York. He has also worked as Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and Museo Jumex in Mexico City.
Satélite Section
The Satélite Sector, curated by Diego Matos, exhibits on the façade of Pavilhão videos from international galleries, proposing an art immersion to the public since their arrival at the Complexo Pacaembu.
Called "Pontos de Luz" (Light Spots), in reference to the song interpreted by Gal Costa, with music and lyrics by Jards Macalé and Waly Salomão, the productions insinuate the idea of body's political actions in the contexts of environmental, social and ethical responsibility. The selected movies were distributed in three subprograms and are daily screened to the public during the days of the fair. It is important to point out that the manifestation of the body is the expressive force sound and image represented in the Pontos de Luz (Light Spots) program.
"The importance of the human being resides in the aesthetic and political survival of art. Art, by ethical principle, does not extract the human being, it permanently calls their presence and dares to sing: 'I dare to speak, I feel happy, I feel very happy, I feel completely happy'", says the curator.
In this sector, there will be video projections created by Anna Bella Geiger, from Galeria Murilo Castro; Carlos Nader, from Galeria Lume; Maya Watanabe, from Tegenboschvanvreden; Rosa Luz, from Central Galeria, Salomé Lamas, from Galeria Miguel Nabinho; Teresa Margolles, from Mor Charpentier; and Mario García Torres, from Galeria Luisa Strina / Jan Mot; Ana Vaz, Frederico Morais, and Janaína Wagner.
Diego Matos (Fortaleza, 1979) has more than 15 years of experience in art research and curatorship of art. He was the chief-curator of the Brazilian Sculpture and Ecology Museum (MuBE). Among his recent works are the anthology Liuba - Corpo Indomável (APCA prize 2023) and the permanent exhibition at the Centro Universitário Maria Antonia - USP. He was also the curator of the 20th SESC videobrasil festival (2017-18). In his first participation at ArPa, Matos will curate the Satellite Sector, dedicated to the contemporary audiovisual production.
Sala MOS
Debuting at the fair, the Sala MOS [MOS Room], curated by Carla Zaccagnini, is a section dedicated to conversations and debates open to the fair's public, sponsored by MOS Incorporadora. Under the title Re-instaurar (Re-establish), the curatorship gathers a series of conversations with artists, curator, restorers and professionals from other fields. The panels’ schedule will be available soon. "Each statement aims to unfold specific content, manifest or latent, which we feel like needs to be discussed at the current moment", says the Sala MOS curator.
Carla Zaccagnini is an Argentinian visual artist, curator, and writer who is based in São Paulo and Malmö (Sweden). Carla was the curator of the 34th Bienal de São Paulo. She graduated in Visual Arts from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (Faap) and obtained a Master's Degree in Visual Poetics from the School of Communication and Arts at the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP).
