Descripción de la Exposición
António Bolota
Benguela, Angola, 1962. Lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.
António Bolota began exhibiting in the mid-1990s, bringing in the artistic universe knowledge from engineering, his area of studies. A series of technical expertise are convened to the creation of sculptures which confront the space, or merge in the architecture.
The work of Bolota always responds to a specific place, it relates with architecture and it is the result of an operation of manipulation of the forces which act on the bodies, such as gravity, weight, attraction, tension or balance. The scale, the relation with the architecture, the relation with the floor, the relation with the body of the spectator, the rigour on the design and on the finishing of the surface and the use of certain materials, constitute a grammar which refers to the experiments carried out in the late 1960s, in the tradition of modern sculpture.
He was one of the artists selected for the EDP New Artists Award, in 2009. For the exhibition, he made a monumental wedge in steel, plaster and iron oxide, in suspension and 1 mm from the floor. Another remarkable intervention was the first exhibition in Quadrado Azul, consisting in a wall sustained by an iron beam and 40 cm from the floor, requiring the confrontation of the viewer with the weight of the wall, when traversing the gallery space.
