Descripción de la Exposición
The works presented in this solo exhibition from Karian Amaya explore the artist’s relationship to the earth, tracing her own journey from her home in Mexico to residencies in Phoenix and New York, and back to her parent’s home in Chihuahua, Mexico. The distance to and from the US-Mexico border is also ever present in each of these crossings, held together formally by the stitches, sutures, and markings seen in Amaya’s works.
[Earth, Lands, Universe, Circumstances.]
These words etched upon copper feel both heavy and delicate, reminding us our crossings are transitory markings upon an earth we merely inhabit. With Analogies of Distance, Amaya offers a poetics of territory, asking the viewer to accept the impermanence of our own dwelling in a world in which natural phenomena and human migration are the only lasting conditions. Viewed as a whole, these works become a metaphor for the geography of imperfection - signaling the inevitable rupture of our physical and emotional realities.
