Descripción de la Exposición
Dina Mitrani Gallery presents Amazogramas by Roberto Huarcaya, an installation of two 30 meter long photograms. During a period of over two years, Huarcaya travelled to the Bahuaja Sonene National Park in southeastern Peru, to capture the lush diversity and enormity of this living environment. Originally approaching the landscape with the intention to photograph, Huarcaya decided to return to an early form of image making, the photogram. Created in the mid 1800's by Henry Fox Talbot, this process is void of machinery, where light sensitive paper retains an imprint, or silhouette, of any matter obstructing the paper from light. Three 30-meter scrolls were placed throughout the Amazon forest using only the passage of time and light, along with the living system, to allow the forest to draw itself on the paper's surface. The nature of the photogram puts the artist in the position of the mediator, placing the object amongst the wild, and waiting for the experience to translate. Amazogramas was first exhibited in Casa Rimac in Lima in August 2014, and most recently at the Biennial of South Korea.
Roberto Huarcaya was born in Lima in 1959. He is the founder and director of the Centro de la Imagen, where he teaches photography since 1999. His artwork has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions, most recently: Sutil Violento, Palácio Galveias-Campo Pequeno, in Lisboa, Portugal. Huarcaya has participated in the 6th Havana Biennial 1997; Lima Biennial 1997, 1998 and 2000; Primavera Fotográfica of Cataluña 1998; PhotoEspaña 1999; 49th Venice Biennial, 2001; in Polyptychs at the Center of Contemporary Art, Seattle, 2007; Dialogues at the Museum of Latin American Art of California in 2009; the Mois de la Photo 2010 in Paris; and Daegu Photo Biennale, Daegu, South Korea in 2014.
Huarcaya's work is included in the collections of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie of Paris, the Fine Arts Museum of Houston, the Museum of Latin American Art of California, the Center of Contemporary Art in Seattle, the Lehigh University Art Collection, the Museo de Arte de Lima, the Museo de San Marcos in Lima, the Fundación América in Santiago, Chile, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wilfredo Lam in Havana, Cuba and many private collections.
