Descripción del Premio
9th of February 2022 – In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has been implemented in many functional fields of daily life starting from the activities that simulate the cognitive abilities of the human being through the management of the civil and social sphere to economic and political activities.
With this premise, within the international network of Urban Labs, AI4future was set, a network formed by Sineglossa, in the role of coordinator, organization for years engaged in projects of art and artificial intelligence, along with partners such as MEET Digital Culture Center, the first international center for Digital Art and Culture in Milan, Espronced Institute of Art and Culture based in Barcelona, V2_Lab for the Unstable Media, the Dutch center for Art and Media Technology and Sardegna Teatro.
AI4Future aims to show how artificial intelligence associated with art can be a powerful advocacy tool at the service of young European activists to address the cultural and social changes of our time. For this reason, the young people involved have first of all redefined the concept of post-covid mobility, understood not only as the possibility of moving, but also as the relationship between the physical and virtual world, the relationship between public and private spaces, social and gender mobility. Starting from these inputs, from February 2022 urban labs will start in the four cities involved, residency and co-design projects between artists, activists and inhabitants.
Artificial Intelligence for Future announced the four winning artists:
Espronceda selects PANORAMAI by Bernat Cuní
Category: AI, phygital worlds and digital barriers
PANORAMAI is an artwork based on endless panorama videos generated by AI using large image datasets created by the community during their commutes and different modes of mobility. This project will use AI to digest extensive amounts of image data in order to learn the visual common denominators of diverse modes of mobility. The learnings will be presented through the generation of novel panorama videos that will visualize the intrinsic characteristics of mobility choices and geographical settings.
PANORAMAI by Bernat Cuní is the chosen project because it’s the one that best suits the aims of Espronceda’s AI4FUTURE open call.
In the first place, the artist is based in Barcelona, which simplifies implementation of his project in terms of cultural and idiomatic barriers. In addition, this fact also facilitates the interactions with the activists involved in the project’s development, such as the social work cooperative Colectic and eXO, a non-profit organization composed of volunteers that works to provide a cost-effective Internet access service. These two organizations are working together to ensure the right to access the Internet by building an open access connection in the neighborhood as a pilot project for families with limited or no access. For them, it’s very important that new narratives on the digital gap arise from this connection in order to reduce it, and PANORAMAI ensures that the final output, the artwork, will work as an engagement point between citizens, policy-makers, activists and other communities. Also, the co-creation with activists is a key point in this project’s production, as it is included in the first stage, where it’s crucial to understand activist’s vision of mobility.
Secondly, PANORAMAI is accurately based on the “phygital” concept, a key point in the open call’s statement, because it will generate endless panorama videos based on large datasets created by the community during their daily commute.
The projects selected by partners are:
Moving Forward by Nino Basilashvili
Selected @Sardegna Teatro
Category: AI and community mobilization in public spaces
Moving Forward is an interactive installation about AI in public space.
In the digital age AI is already measuring and predicting our behavior, participants will experience control and prediction in public space. The data that emerges reveals how it is possible to make predictions about, for example, our purchasing behavior, how we relate in public space, and how we interact with one another.
Upon entering the space, the movement of participants will be detected and measured by an artificial intelligence, the behavioral variable resulting from the awareness of the prediction will then be analyzed.
ROSETTA MISSION 2022 by Luca Pozzi
Selected @MEET DIGITAL CULTURE CENTER, Milan
Category: AI, platform urbanism and social mobility
“RM2022” is inspired by the homonymous space mission of E.S.A., the European Spatial Agency between 2004 and 2016. It is the 3D reconstruction of the 67.P Churyumov Gerasimenko comet, transformed from a physical celestial body into a digital convergence point for different disciplines. The “RM2022” is a temporary free Hub, without specific political, religious, and geographical
coordinates, suitable for interdisciplinary contributions and social interaction: a meeting point for activists, artists, philosophers, and scientists. A place for a hybrid public that overcomes the linguistic and physical boundaries in the pandemic era.
Love, not a scam by Chunju Yu
