Descripción de la Exposición

In Afinidades Selectivas DUARTE AMARAL NETTO proposes a reflection about the current condition of the family photography genre, in particular the meaningful organization of family memories into the form of photo albums. At a time when film and paper are progressively being substituted by the digital supports, the family archive as a receptacle of intimate memories is also under threat.

The gradual dematerialization of the photographic image, translated as digital archive and leveled to other kinds of digital information, stored in hard drives, where it is subordinated under illegible designations, affects directly the family photography genre. The family album is becoming increasingly mischaracterized, as its traditional forms as carefully organized folders or other handcrafted solutions are abandoned. In this sense, since 2006 that DUARTE AMARAL NETTO develops a personal photo album composed of snapshots transferred onto Moleskine notebooks. The first ... presentation of this project, the exhibition Do que nos lembramos quando nos lembramos de nós (2010), emphasized the role of vernacular imagery, from the album, as elements that potentiated the creation of a fiction around the idea of family. Afinidades Selectivas, being the project's second presentation, prescribes a wider vision on the topic. Besides the transferred albums, it also includes the actual snapshots and projections of slides with a selection from the artist's own vernacular photography collection. Photography and its organization in albums, as personal archives of significant memory, are thus perceived as primary elements for the creation of meaning from personal and family experiences.

Afinidades Selectivas is DUARTE AMARAL NETTO's second solo exhibition at Baginski, Galeria/ Projectos.

The work by DUARTE AMARAL NETTO (Lisbon, Portugal, 1976), explores the contextual nature of image, by the creation of narratives that dilute the border between the documental and the fictional, through the appropriation and manipulation of images from diverse sources. Other work explores compositions of a scenic quality, characterized by the immobility and artificiality of characters and situations, alluding to the vocabulary of cinema, exploring the transtextual bonds between photography, painting, film and installation. DUARTE AMARAL NETTO was one of the nominees for the 2012 BES Photo Award, having in this context exhibited Z at the São Paulo's Pinacoteca and the Berardo Museum, in Lisbon.

Its education includes the Photography Course of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's 'Criatividade e Criação Artística' Programme, which followed the Photography Course at Ar.CO, having also been awarded with the Kodak Grant (2000) and the Grand Pris of the 48th Salon de Montrouge, in Paris (2003). Having exhibited at the Gulbenkian Museum (2007; 2006), DUARTE AMARAL NETTO's work is represented in several private and public collections, both in Portugal and abroad, from which stand out the BES Arte, AR.CO, PLMJ and the Museu da Cidade collections.
