Descripción de la Exposición
Jonathan LeVine Gallery presents 'About Head', an exhibition of new paintings by Spanish artist Eloy Morales in what will be his debut solo exhibition in the United States. In conjunction with About Head, a limited-edition exhibition catalogue will be released at the opening reception.
A master of hyperrealist painting, Morales predominately creates large-scale portraits.About Head is a continuation of this theme and includes a series of 14 paintings in which Morales has created tightly cropped compositions of the human head. By concentrating on the face the artist is granted an opportunity to engage with the psychological aspects of his subjects through the astounding communicative power of the gaze. Often including external elements that add color and texture, Morales himself appears in three of the works with his face covered in paint.
While photographs have a major role in Morales' creative process, his intention is never to duplicate an image but rather to utilize it as documentary support and explore its limits as a way to transcend reality. He explains, "I try to adhere to the line where reality coexists in natural form with my inner world. I believe in the immense power of images and their infinite possibilities." Through a meticulous depiction of the human form, Morales' works have the ability to shift away from realism into the realm of abstraction, expanding the viewers' consciousness and conception of reality.
Eloy Morales was born in 1973 in Madrid, Spain. The majority of his works are hyperrealist portraits rendered in oil on canvas and pencil on paper. His works have been exhibited in galleries throughout the world, including France, Mexico, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom and are included in the Howard A. and Judith Tullman Collection, one of the largest collections of realist art.
