“The artist, who was born in Chile in 1967 and now works in Berlin, is one of the most outstanding contemporary graphic artists. Her completely independent, deeply moving poetic imagery emerges from her personal experience. It is rooted in the traditions and myths of her Chilean origins, and also draws on sources from European cultural history. Sandra Vásquez della Horra’s drawings deal with borderline experiences, femininity, fear and death, yet also poetry. Her subject matter points far beyond the episodic to primordial human experiences.” (Excerpt from the jury statement)
Sandra Vásquez de la Horra
“The sheer scale and exuberance of her imagination is reflected by the precision of her artistic technique when working with graphite and gouache in a wide variety of formats. One aspect which makes her drawings unique and immediately recognizable is that she dips the completed works in wax. The beeswax adds a translucent quality to her works by lending a warm, fragrant sensuousness to the surface of the paper while simultaneously enhancing the fragility of the drawing.” (Dr Stephanie Buck, Director of Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at Dresden State Art Collections)
Sandra Vásquez de la Horra was born in 1967 in Viña del Mar, Chile, where she grew up in a Catholic family under Augusto Pinochet’s authoritarian regime. After studying at the University for Design in Viña del Mar from 1989 to 1994, she moved to Germany, where she enrolled at Düsseldorf Art Academy under Jannis Kounellis and Rosemarie Trockel before attending the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. She currently lives and works in Berlin.
Artworks by this highly remarkable artist are contained in many international collections. Three works by Sandra Vásquez de la Horras were displayed in the exhibition Crossing Borders held at the Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photographs to mark its 300th anniversary.
