GARBOUSHIAN GALLERY presents an exhibition of new works by Mexican born artist, Miguel Osuna. This marks Osuna's first solo exhibition with the gallery. The new works will be presented in two parts. SPIN 1 opens November 10 and SPIN 2 opens November 29, 2012.

Working in a wide range of materials from white pencil on canvas to ballpoint pen on recycled plastic, Miguel Osuna's aesthetic is one of precision, objectivity and expansiveness. Divided into four interrelated bodies of work, described as Membranes, Orbitals, Blurs and Centrifugations, each of these groupings explores the concept of motion on a molecular level as Osuna examines both velocity and gravity as an intimate and complicated visual experience.

Literally, the verb to spin is defined as 'to draw out and twist (fibers) into thread,' and in physics, spinning refers to 'the intrinsic angular momentum of a subatomic particle' however Osuna is also deeply compelled toward a more metaphoric meaning as well, one that 'provides a visual interpretation of a statement, experience or event especially in a way meant to sway or influence,' and it is this shifting territory, this spinning out as it were from the interior to the exterior, from the subjective to the objective, and the private to the universal that gives this work an intrinsic presence and power.

Among these four distinct categories movement is perceived and contained within the picture planes differently. For example, with the Orbital series, Osuna literally spins his canvas to achieve the circular forms that resemble targets or Hindu mandalas, expanding on the idea of the infinite as related to String Theory and quantum mechanics, whereas in the Membranes grouping the spinning occurs within the mechanism of the ballpoint pen itself marking the canvas in circular motion that is much more intimate and biomorphic. Osuna's Blurs are reminiscent of those fleeting, incongruous images seen on a road trip across the country, and which comprise the fractured foundation of human memory, and further still with the Centrifugations, particles are literally suspended on resin and react to the action of spinning. Time and gravity affect the pieces further during the process of curing, adding another layer of volatility and randomness to the work.

An opening reception for Miguel Osuna's SPIN 1 will take place on Saturday, November 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. SPIN 2 opens November 29. The exhibition will remain on view until December 15, 2012.
