Descripción del Artista
Sofía Olascoaga (b. Mexico City, 1980) works in the intersections of art, research and education by activating spaces for critical thinking and collective action. Olascoaga is a Research Fellow at Indpendent Curators International, and completed the Whitney Museum of American Art s Independent Study Program in 2010. Received her BFA with honors from La Esmeralda National School of Fine Arts (Mexico City). Olascoaga s interdisciplinary practice involves experimental design of think-tanks and encounters in a wide range of institutional, and independent spaces, with artists, theorists, curators and educators. She was Workshop Clinics Director for SITAC X the International Symposium of Contemporary Art Theory, in Mexico City in 2012. Olascoaga has collaborated in international laboratories for public programs at MoMA New York, Steirischer Herbst Festival in Austria, Experimental Nucleus for Art and Pedagogy in Rio de Janeiro, Free Thought platform by Irit Rogoff, Independent Curators International in New York, street public program La Galeria de Comercio, and Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City, among many others. Between Utopia and Failure, her ongoing research is focused in critically assessing the productive tension between utopia and failure of intentional community models, developed in Mexico in past decades. While developing research, Olascoaga has been an artist in residence at Beta Local in Puerto Rico where she created a publication on Ivan Illich s repercussion in Puerto Rico. She has been awarded grants by the Young Artist Program and a Co-Investment Grant from FONCA, Fundación CIAC, Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo, and Secretaría de Educación Pública, as well as a One to Watch professional acknowledgement by ArtTable. She participated in the educational-laboratory exhibition Jardin de Academus at MUAC in Mexico City, and 2 or 3 things we ve learned about art, pedagogy and protest at Bidelde Kunst Vienna.
