Descripción del Artista

Zwelethu Mthethwa is a contemporary South African artist known for his portrait photographs and paintings. His richly colored images of migrant workers brought a different take on post-apartheid South Africa. “What portraiture is about is, you’re really trying to get into a person’s skin,” he has explained. Born in 1960 in Durban, South Africa, he studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town and later received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology where he received a master’s degree in 1989. After returning to South Africa and spending some time working in business, he taught photography and drawing at his alma mater. He left the position in 1999 to focus full time on his artwork. In 2010, he exhibited “Inner Views” at the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY, which showcased work from three series that concentrated on interior shots of people in their residences. In 2017, Mthethwa was convicted of the 2013 murder of a 23-year-old sex worker named Nokuphila Kumalo. The artist is currently serving an 18-year jail sentence in a South African prison. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the South African National Gallery in Cape Town, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, among others.
