Michael Craig-Martin was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1941. He was educated in the US, studying Fine Art at Yale University. He came to Britain on completion of his studies in 1966, and has lived and worked here ever since. His first solo exhibition was at the Rowan Gallery, London in 1969. He participated in the definitive exhibition of British conceptual art, The New Art at the Hayward Gallery in 1972. An oak tree of 1973 is widely considered an iconic conceptual work. He is best known today for his line drawings of commonplace objects and intensely coloured paintings, sculptures, prints, and installations. Over the past 50 years he has done numerous exhibitions and installations in galleries and museums across the world, including the Pompidou and MoMA. A retrospective of his work was presented at the Whitechapel Gallery London in 1989, a second at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2006, and a third at the Royal Academy in London in 2024. Craig-Martin is well known to have been an influential teacher and is considered a key figure in the emergence of the young British artists in the early 90’s. His former students include Damien Hirst, Julian Opie, Fiona Rae, Sarah Lucas, Gary Hume. In 2015 he published a book titled On being an artist that combines reminiscence, personal philosophy, and advice. He was an Tate Trustee from1989-99, an Art Fund Trustee from 2005-15, was awarded a CBE in 2000, elected an RA in 2006, and knighted for his services to art in 2016.
